Dear Parents, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcome to our monthly newsletter.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the heart of the ARIS educational model, students\u2019 learning and experience are at the centre.  It is a promise to raise standards for all children and to help all children meet those standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every child can succeed academically and in life, and every parent, family member, and caregiver can assist. The question is, how can we assist our children in succeeding? According to the research, combining how we prepare students and how they learn is the key to success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What we say and do in our daily lives can help them to develop positive attitudes towards learning and to build confidence in themselves as learners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although school is very important, it does not consume a large portion of a child’s time. The school year is 180 days long, so a child spends 49% of the year at school and 51% of the time at home. Clearly, a child’s non-school hours and days are also important for learning. Here are some suggestions to help your child make the most of that time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Encourage your child to read<\/strong>:<\/mark> It is the key to lifelong learning. Set aside quiet time for family reading. Keep books, magazines, and newspapers in the house. Reading materials don\u2019t have to be new or expensive.  Encourage your child to pick a reading book from our Digital Librar<\/strong>y or library<\/strong>. Show that you value reading. Getting help for your child if s\/he has a reading problem is essential. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Talk with your child:<\/strong><\/mark> Talking and listening play major roles in children\u2019s school success. Find time to talk with your child. This allows children to express their emotions while learning to listen, follow directions, and pay attention in class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Monitor Homework:<\/strong><\/mark> <\/strong>Make a homework schedule. Having regular homework time helps children complete their assignments. Remove all potential distractions. Discourage your child from making and receiving social phone calls during homework by turning off the TV. (Unless contacting a classmate about an assignment may be beneficial.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Monitor TV Viewing and Video Game Playing:<\/strong><\/mark> <\/strong> Limit the time you let your child watch TV or play games. As with TV programs, be aware of the games he likes to play and discuss his choices with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Help Your Child Learn to Use the Internet Properly and Effectively:<\/strong><\/mark> <\/strong>Monitor the amount of time your child spends online. Internet surfing can be just as time-consuming as watching TV. Don\u2019t let it take over your child\u2019s life.  Contact our Counseling Department. They are equipped to support your child. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
