SECONDARY HIGHLIGHTS(Oct 22)

Dear Parents,

Welcome to our monthly newsletter.

At the heart of the ARIS educational model, students’ learning and experience are at the centre.  It is a promise to raise standards for all children and to help all children meet those standards.

Every child can succeed academically and in life, and every parent, family member, and caregiver can assist. The question is, how can we assist our children in succeeding? According to the research, combining how we prepare students and how they learn is the key to success.

What we say and do in our daily lives can help them to develop positive attitudes towards learning and to build confidence in themselves as learners.

Although school is very important, it does not consume a large portion of a child’s time. The school year is 180 days long, so a child spends 49% of the year at school and 51% of the time at home. Clearly, a child’s non-school hours and days are also important for learning. Here are some suggestions to help your child make the most of that time:

1. Encourage your child to read: It is the key to lifelong learning. Set aside quiet time for family reading. Keep books, magazines, and newspapers in the house. Reading materials don’t have to be new or expensive.  Encourage your child to pick a reading book from our Digital Library or library. Show that you value reading. Getting help for your child if s/he has a reading problem is essential.

2. Talk with your child: Talking and listening play major roles in children’s school success. Find time to talk with your child. This allows children to express their emotions while learning to listen, follow directions, and pay attention in class.

3. Monitor Homework: Make a homework schedule. Having regular homework time helps children complete their assignments. Remove all potential distractions. Discourage your child from making and receiving social phone calls during homework by turning off the TV. (Unless contacting a classmate about an assignment may be beneficial.)

5. Monitor TV Viewing and Video Game Playing:  Limit the time you let your child watch TV or play games. As with TV programs, be aware of the games he likes to play and discuss his choices with him.

6. Help Your Child Learn to Use the Internet Properly and Effectively: Monitor the amount of time your child spends online. Internet surfing can be just as time-consuming as watching TV. Don’t let it take over your child’s life.  Contact our Counseling Department. They are equipped to support your child.

7.Encourage your child to be responsible and to work independently:

  • Establish rules. Have your child help you set rules, then make sure that you enforce the rules consistently.
  • Make your child responsible for getting ready to go to school each morning—getting up on time, ensuring he has everything he needs for the school day, and so forth. If necessary, make a checklist to help him remember what he has to do.
  • Make it clear to your child that s/he has to take responsibility for what he does at home and school.
  • Work with your child to develop a reasonable, consistent schedule of tasks to do around the house. ( both household and school tasks).

8. Make a schedule:

Work with your child to follow a daily schedule even for weekends to develop time and self management skills.

Let us work together.
